Children spend the majority of each day outdoors. Our time is mostly spent in our forest space, our garden or out exploring the farm. We are a play-based program and approach learning from the emerging interests and questions of the children.
Job Description
The Language Garden is seeking a part-time preschool teacher who is fluent in Spanish. This teacher will collaborate with a teaching partner, facilitating and nurturing the children’s interaction with the natural world around them while immersing the children in the Spanish language. The teacher will work to create class communities where students feel safe to be themselves, to take risks, and to develop skills at their own pace. Lessons and projects will be based on the observation of the children allowing the curriculum to emerge with the pursuits and questions of the children. And last, this individual must be dedicated to personal self-reflection and evaluation of their interactions with the children.

The ideal teacher will:
- Have an understanding of the developmental needs of young children
- Be able to engage children and redirect behavior
- Have a passion for working with young children in nature. (Be comfortable with mud and with all kinds of weather.)
- Be self-motivated to work independently and collaboratively
- Have strong leadership abilities and excellent interpersonal skills, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Feel comfortable and confident about meeting the needs of children outdoors in all seasons.
- Be calm, warm and nurturing in their approach with young children.
- Demonstrate curiousity, flexibility, and creativity.
- Will be able to both plan lessons and recognize moments to follow the lead of the children.
Responsibilities
- Co-teach groups of no more than 12 children in mixed age classes.
- Bring an immersive approach to Spanish while working with children.
- Take children on exploration walks, play games, tell stories, sing songs, make art outdoors
- Support the social and emotional growth of each child
- Have a calm, nurturing approach with young children.
- Build positive relationships with each child, the co-teacher and the families.
- Observe the children in order to understand growth and to plan offerings.
- Document activities and share with families.
- Foster joy and wonder in nature in all kinds of weather.
- Facilitate exploration and appropriate risk-taking by the children.
- Foster play, problem solving and collaborating between children.
- Maintain school supplies through organization and cleaning.
Qualifications
- Experience working with children 2-5 years old and an understanding of child development
- Experience working in an outdoor setting with children preferred
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work as part of a team with patience and flexibility
- Dedication to self-reflection and a desire to continually improve your craft
- Physical ability to be outside each day, moving and walking in all weather and the ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
- Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or an approved medical and religious waiver
Time Commitment
- Part Time: 25.5 hours per week; Mon – Fri 8:30-1:30 (Wed. 8:30-2:00).
- This is a 10-month position, with the possibility to renew for the following school year.
- Compensation is commensurate with experience.
